HOW TO USE THE WELWYN HATFIELD COMMUNITY CHEST
What is the Welwyn Hatfield Community Chest?
The Welwyn Hatfield Community Chest was launched in June 2008. It is a Councillor-led initiative enabling Ward Councillors and residents to work together to agree on and develop local improvement ideas. This gives everyone a greater role in enhancing local quality of life.
Each participating Ward develops an Ward Improvement Plan which is owned by all of the Ward Councillors. This Plan identifies where there is a need for work to improve, enhance or develop the local community. Community Chest can be a means of funding any agreed improvement work. Ward Improvement Plans can be used to resolve many of the small but important issues which concern residents, but which remain unresourced in the absence of alternative funding or help.
What kind of projects can be funded by the Welwyn Hatfield Community Chest?
Here are a few examples of improvement projects which could be eligible for consideration under Community Chest. This list is not exhaustive.
-
Tree, shrub, flower planting and small-scale landscaping in public areas.
-
Replacement or repair of children’s play equipment in public areas.
-
New equipment for a local community hall or meeting place which promotes greater levels of use by the community.
-
Local events which promote the take-up of organised sport or physical activity by residents.
-
Other one-off small grants to local groups and associations which enhance community life.
If your suggestion is not covered in this list, it may still be eligible for consideration under Community Chest.
What do I do if I want my Ward Councillors to apply on my behalf?
The first thing you need to do is to speak to them. They manage the Ward Improvement Plan for your area and will consider your suggestion. You should make sure it delivers a benefit to the wider local community and not just to yourself.
Once you have done this, and if your Ward Councillors agree to make an application on your behalf, they will prepare it for you and submit it to the Council. They will let you know the date when the application will be considered, and the outcome of the decision. You are welcome to attend the meeting when your application is considered to hear the discussion for yourself.
